24 MAKE ZERO TIME

Burn-out happens when our emotional output exceeds what we get back emotionally. If you knock yourself out at work, but feel unfulfilled, unappreciated and isolated, then sooner or later you are going to grind to a halt. This exercise is designed to allow you to manage your inner resources. The key is to make time each day when you can replenish yourself by doing nothing.

1 Take a few deep breaths and pick up your calendar. Look over your past week – if it has been chock-full of tasks and appointments, vow to make the coming week different.

2 Pick up a pen and, instead of first filling in your ‘to-dos’, ink in a time each day to do absolutely nothing. It is worth doing this on paper rather than on an electronic scheduler, which is easy to change.

3 When a task comes in, or someone wants to arrange a meeting, resist the temptation to do it in one of your zero times. Say you are busy – and mentally think: ‘I am busy doing nothing!’ Use the affirmation opposite to remind yourself why you are doing this.
